Kao Saelee arrived in the US at age 2 as a refugee from Laos. He and his family are Mien, an ethnic minority that faces persecution in Laos. He served as a firefighter for California wildfires during his 22-year sentence for an armed robbery he participated in as a teenager. He should have been released and reunited with his family last month, but instead, upon his release, the California department of corrections and rehabilitation (CDCR) sent him to ICE. Transfers like these have been happening even though they are not required by law. Today’s action is to send an email to the governor of California, demanding Saelee’s release from ICE and also an end to the practice of sending refugees and immigrants to ICE at the end of their prison sentences.
