After a slur was used in one of the posts of the popular Instagram account “So You Want To Talk About,” the author of the page came forward, revealed her identity, and shared more about the origins of the page and her collaborators. Many of the page’s 3 million-plus (at the time) followers were surprised to learn that the page was run by Jessica Natale, a white woman and former Bernie campaign volunteer, and not Ijeoma Oluo, the black woman author of the best-selling book “So You Want to Talk About Race,” that the page seemingly took its inspiration from. Jessica was then accused of capitalizing on a black woman’s work to build a brand and a following that ultimately led to a book deal. You can read more about the story in the Guardian. Jessica has since apologized to Ijeoma Oluo and changed the name of the page to So Informed. Today’s action is to follow Ijeoma Oluo on Instagram and watch her account of the series events in her highlighted stories (labeled “About SYWWTA”) on her page.
